Alabama offensive lineman Cam Robinson, teammate arrested

MONROE, La. (AP) – Alabama offensive lineman Cam Robinson and reserve defensive back Laurence “Hootie” Jones have been released from jail after their arrest on drug and weapons charges.

Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s records show Robinson and Jones were cited Tuesday for the misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon in the presence of narcotics. Robinson also faces a charge of felony possession of stolen firearms.

“We are aware of the situation involving Hootie Jones and Cam Robinson and are in the process of gathering facts to determine what internal action needs to be taken,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement.

Robinson and Jones were released on bond Tuesday morning, said Glenn Springfield, a spokesman for the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s office. He said he didn’t know the amounts.

Monroe police detective Chris Bates said the players were arrested early Tuesday morning after an officer smelled marijuana coming from their parked car.

Both players are entering their junior seasons.

Robinson (6-foot-6, 325 pounds) is from West Monroe, Louisiana, and started his freshman and sophomore years after arriving as one of the nation’s top prospects. Last season, the 20-year-old left tackle was named first-team All-Southeastern Conference by The Associated Press and is considered a top 2017 NFL draft prospect.

Robinson finished last season’s national championship run strong.

He had six knockdown blocks in the playoff semifinal game against Michigan State and two more in the national championship against Clemson while not allowing a sack in either game.

Alabama players rose to their teammates’ defense on social media.

Safety Ronnie Harrison posted on Twitter: “I know both of them personally neither one of them would just steal a gun.. Let’s be real.”

In another Twitter post, defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand said: “You can do a million things right. As soon as you make one mistake you magically just become a menace to Society… Don’t make sense.”

Jones (6-2, 215 pounds) is from Monroe, Louisiana. He was regarded as one of the nation’s top safety prospects out of high school but has played sparingly.
