Would-be burglar caught on camera canvassing NFM neighborhood

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- A man was captured on surveillance video attempting to break into vehicles in a North Fort Myers neighborhood Wednesday night.

Shortly after 9 p.m., a homeowner in the 1600 block of St. Clair Avenue E. noticed the suspect trying to break into his car.

The resident’s outdoor security cameras captured clear images of the man attempting to break into both cars parked in the driveway. The suspect used a flashlight to see what was accessible in the cars, but when he tried to unsuccessfully open the locked doors, he walked away, authorities said.

“In this case, the doors were locked and, at least at this one house, the burglar’s efforts were thwarted,” said Trish Routte, Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers coordinator. “But the likelihood that he made similar attempts at other homes in the area is high.”

Anyone with information on the identity and whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).  All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.  Tips may also be made online at www.swflcrimestoppers.org or by texting a tip to CRIMES (274637) Keyword: REWARD.
