Customers bid final adieu to longtime downtown Fort Myers restaurant

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Loyal customers packed a restaurant that’s long been a mainstay of downtown Fort Myers on Friday, the last day for The Connection Bar & Grill.

Better known by its former name, the French Connection Café, the meeting spot at the corner of First and Jackson streets was full of patrons who came to say their final goodbyes to a downtown institution.

“The French Connection and the connection name pretty much says it — this is where locals have been coming for 20 some years to connect with each other,” customer Terry Tincher said.

The restaurant opened its doors in 1986, and in the three decades since, it’s made an impression that kept many people coming back.

“This place has been a real treasure for downtown Fort Myers, and I hope whatever replaces it will do the same,” Connection frequenter Bob Meade said.

A new restaurant with different ownership, called Izzy’s Fish and Oyster, is planned to open at the location later this year.
