JACKSONVILLE (AP) – Authorities have arrested a man they say fired shots at a couple in a car just outside a college campus in north Florida.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s officials say the couple noticed a man walking toward them holding a partially concealed gun Thursday night near Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Baymeadows campus.

The victims told authorities the man suddenly yelled for them to stop. The female driver said she tried to drive away as the man fired at least one round into the car, striking the 18-year-old male passenger.

The Florida Times-Union reports the alleged gunman, 22-year-old Maxwell Lewis Martin, was caught at a nearby apartment complex. He was charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. It’s unclear what prompted the shooting.

The college president issued a statement saying the campus was placed on lockdown.
