FORT MYERS, Fla. — A 16-year-old was struck by a car as he was trying to board his school bus shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday near the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Bombay Lane, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Cameron Mayhew, a student at Fort Myers High School, was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He suffered facial and cranial trauma. He remained in critical condition as late as 8:30 p.m., according to hospital officials.

The collision happened when Mayhew was trying to board a school bus, FHP spokesperson Greg Bueno said.

The bus was stopped and had extended its stop sign when a 2003 Chrysler, driven by 23-year-old Zackery Treinin of Cape Coral, hit the student, an FHP report said.

Neither Treinin nor anyone aboard the school bus was injured, Bueno added.

The incident closed Pine Ridge between Kelly Road and Derwent Boulevard for nearly three hours. The road reopened shortly before 9 a.m.

Treinin is facing charges for failing to stop for a school bus, according to FHP.
