Florida A&M President could be forced out by next year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida A&M University President Elmira Mangum could be forced to leave her job within the next year.

Trustees at the university on Friday refused to vote on whether to extend Mangum’s contract. That means that Mangum must leave her job by April 2017 under the terms of her current contract.

Mangum was hired to lead FAMU out of a turbulent period following the death of Marching 100 band member Robert Champion. But she got locked in a power struggle with some trustees. Past FAMU presidents and some faculty say they no longer support her.

Mangum was hired in 2014 and is paid $425,000 a year.

Last year, trustees nearly fired Mangum. Amid the fallout, some trustees resigned, while others were not reappointed.

In order for Mangum to keep her job, trustees would have to negotiate a new contract.
