Retzer said she had been in talks with the city manager about bacteria levels at the yacht club. She was worried about the safety of the water despite July 7 test results only showing minor levels of toxins, she said.

The mayor teamed up the with city manager and Rep. Dane Eagle to close the Yacht Club’s beach Sunday. Rep. Eagle said in a written statement that the risks were not worth keeping the beach open:

“While toxins found in the waters are considered very low by World Health Organization standards, we are not taking any risks and closed the beach out of an abundance of caution. I will continue to work with Mayor Retzer and the proper city, county, and state officials to monitor the situation as we work towards solutions.”

Environmental specialist were testing the water in the area on July 14. Those test results are not yet available.
