CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A free, active shooter training session will be offered by the Cape Coral Police Department on Aug. 31.

ALICE-certified instructors will hold the session from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at CCPD’s headquarters located at 1100 Cultural Park Blvd.

“A lot of people don’t think ‘what would I do if I was in that situation in a place not familiar to me?'” Sgt. Dana Coston said.

The class offers individuals tips on how to proactively handle the threat of an intruder or active shooter event.

“The idea that it can’t happen here is proven unfortunately to be untrue,” Coston said. “In June we had an active shooter shoot a person in Cape Coral on the roadway and then kill someone at Circle K.”

Class size is limited to 35 people but additional sessions may be offered depending on demand, police said.

“We need to prepare citizens for the unfortunate possibility it can happen again,” Coston added. “The worst thing you can do in an active shooter situation is nothing.”
