WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) – A former Delray Beach doctor has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the overdose death of one of his patients.

News outlets report 60-year-old Barry Schultz entered his plea Wednesday after he was charged with prescribing an amount of methadone to 50-year-old David Tain in 2010 that investigators called “reckless.” Tain died three days later.

A Palm Beach County judge gave Schultz a five-year prison sentence, to run concurrently with a 25-year sentence he’s already serving for drug trafficking crimes. A jury in November found Schultz guilty of prescribing as many as 20,000 narcotics pills to patients who came to his office complaining of pain.

Schultz is appealing his November conviction on the drug charges, while prosecutors are appealing his sentence for that conviction.
