Task force to debate legacy of troubled Florida school

MARIANNA, Fla. (AP) – Struggling to figure out what to do with the legacy of a shuttered reform school, Florida may rebury bodies found on the school campus somewhere in the state capital.

A state-created task force on Friday recommended that any unclaimed remains from the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys be sent to Tallahassee for final burial. Remains from 51 bodies were exhumed from the school grounds during an investigation.

The task force also recommended that two memorials noting the troubled reform school be placed in the state capital and in the county where the school was located.

The school, located 60 miles west of Tallahassee, was shut down in 2011. Some former students have accused school officials of physical and sexual abuse.

The recommendations aren’t binding but they followed a contentious all-day meeting.
