Bacteria is killing ducks in North Naples

Published: Updated:

NORTH NAPLES, Fla. – First paralysis happens, then the ducks die a slow death.

Rhonda Watkins, an environmental specialists for Collier County, says the ducks are succumbing to toxicity from a bacteria called botulism, which occurs in fresh water when oxygen isn’t produced.

The condition that allowed botulism bacteria to flourish in a North Naples canal is heavy cloud cover during recent storm events. There is nothing humans can do to help the ducks.
