FORT MYERS, Fla. – If you ever wonder if you are really saving depending on the chain you grocery shop at, wonder no more.

WINK News did the bargain shopping for you by comparing prices at our four largest grocery chains: Publix, Target, Walmart and Winn Dixie. We picked 12 items often purchased: bananas, Wonder bread classic, Eggland eggs, store brand eggs, DiGiorno pizza, Jiff peanut butter, Oscar Meyer bacon, Oreos, Prego spaghetti sauce, Ritz crackers, rotisserie chicken and Tropicana orange juice. Then we price compared them at the different stores, targeting four locations for each chain: Cape Coral, Southwest Lee County, East Lee County and Naples.

On average, Walmart was the least expensive with the total bill coming in at $36.62. Winn Dixie was $37.42, Target was $37.64 and Publix was the most expensive at $41.62.

In statement to WINK News, Publix spokesperson Brian West said, “Publix isn’t a price leader, but our product quality and customer service continue to be the reason our customers love shopping at Publix.”

It is also important to note, that one of the products we purchased was a buy one, get one, so you may be able to make your money back if you shop the weekly deals.
