Health department expands Miami Beach Zika zone

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health says the area where local transmission of the Zika virus on Miami Beach has expanded to 4.5 square miles, Gov. Rick Scott announced.

However, mosquito control measures appear to have extinguished local transmission in the Wynwood area of Miami-Dade, the governor said. The alert for that zone is expected to be lifted Monday.

Wynwood and Miami Beach are the only areas of local transmission so far identified in the continental United States.

There have been 35 locally transmitted cases associated with the Miami Beach area, which previously encompassed only 1.5 square miles, according to Scott. The health department announced earlier Friday that a fifth mosquito sample from the zone had tested positive for the virus.

Scott announced earlier Friday while in Fort Myers that he would channel an additional $10 million in state funding to fight Zika.
