Bicyclist hit, killed in North Fort Myers crash

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — A bicyclist hit by an SUV on Sunday has died from the injuries suffered in the crash, Florida Highway Patrol said.

North Fort Myers resident James Boetius McCarty, 76, was hit shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Slater Road and Mellow Drive in North Fort Myers. McCarty, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was originally in critical condition when he was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, FHP said. He was pronounced dead Wednesday.

The driver of the SUV, 69-year-old Romelio Valdes of North Fort Myers, was unhurt but cited for violating the right of way at a stop sign, according to FHP.
