CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Pine Island Road was temporarily closed Sunday night between the 1900 and 2000 blocks west near the German-American Club because of a crash involving serious injuries, the Cape Coral Police Department said.

A 13-year-old cyclist and his 11-year-old passenger, both Cape Coral residents, were flown to a hospital after colliding with a Red 2011 Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 16-year-old from St. James City. The 16-year-old was unhurt, but the 11-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries.

The wreck took place at about 7:30 p.m. at Pine Island Road and Southwest 20th Avenue. It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The bicycle didn’t have a headlight, taillight, or any reflectors. Neither cyclist was wearing a helmet.

No further information is immediately available.
