CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A call made to a Cape Coral Police Department spokesperson has prompted a warning about attempted identity theft.

Det. Sgt. Dana Coston said he received a call from someone claiming to want to fix his computer.

“If they are calling my phone, then they are probably calling 10,000 other phones in the 239 area code,” Coston said.

The callers ask for remote access to your computer, claiming they need it to do preventative maintenance.

“That means any of your personal information or your computer, bank accounts, passwords whatever information you may have, they have access to,” he said.

Microsoft puts out warnings about this type of scam on its website. The company said it never solicits customers about technical support — customers have to contact the company first.
