FGCU students shave heads for charity

FORT MYERS, Fla. — FGCU students shaved their heads in public Thursday as part of an effort to fight children’s cancer.

Students donated their hair to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a charity that raises money for cancer research. FGCU raised over $15,000 last year for the foundation and $7,000 this year.

“I love working with children, so it’s something personal to me,” said student Karin Zangara-Hinman, who had her pink-dyed curls sheared away.

Fellow FGCU student and event volunteer Rachel Goldberg, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 15 years old, expressed her gratitude with the event’s outcome.

“I went through chemo and radiation and lost all my hair,” Goldberg said. “It’s really important because people don’t realize how life threatening it is at such a young age.”
