With prospects on the line, South Fort Myers athlete appeals law

Published:

FORT MYERS, Fla. – South Fort Myers High School junior Darfnell Gouin’s dreams of playing college football were nearly dashed after he tore his ACL just ahead of football season. He is recovering from his injury and believed he’d be able to impress college scouts next school year.

He was wrong.

The Florida High School Athletic Association prohibits athletes older than 18 from participating in high school sports. Gouin turns 19 in June, which deems him ineligible. Now he is fighting for his chance to football by appealing the rule.
