Building mistake continues to haunt SWFL residents

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A home-building company admitted in March there was a problem with their product.

Beazer Homes incorrectly installed stucco, allowing water to seep into hundreds of Florida homes.

Many of these homes also suffered from black mold and crumbling materials due to the installation mistake.

As of September, Beazer Homes had repaired 437 homes, but has refused to repair others due to the expiration of their 10-year warranty, enraging homeowners like Pat Eberle.

“It’s a very widespread problem, so I don’t know how you can hide behind ten years when it’s such a large problem on a large scale,” Eberle said.

A spokesperson for Beazer said they’ve spent $56 million on repairs, citing the Florida statute that the company won’t repair a home when the owner files a claim after 10 years.

People whose homes couldn’t be repaired argued the builder knew about the problem beforehand and should be held responsible.

“They knew before this,” Danny Hogan said. “They were suing their subcontractors before this. They knew there was issues going on.”

Many homeowners have submitted formal complaints to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, hoping strength in numbers will help their situation.

Anyone whose home suffered damages from this installation mistake can fill out a complaint form on the Florida DBPR website.
