Have a safe Thanksgiving with some useful tips

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Keep your family safe this holiday season with some helpful hints from Charlotte County Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

There are more cooking fires on Thanksgiving than a regular day, according to the U.S. Fire administration.

Cooking a conventional bird this year? Here are some tips to keep your Turkey Day safe and enjoyable.

Keep children away from the cooking area, don’t wear long sleeves near a heat source, turn handles inward on the stove top, always remember to turn off any appliances when finished cooking, and have a fire extinguisher close by, according to Charlotte County Fire and EMS.

In addition, if you’re deep frying your turkey this year, be sure to use these safety tips when preparing your Thanksgiving feast.

Properly prep the turkey, pick a safe spot, be cautious with the amount of oil used, monitor the oil temperature, and have a fire extinguisher readily available, according to Charlotte County Fire and EMS.
