FORT MYERS, Fla. — More than 48 million Americans are traveling this week for Thanksgiving, according to AAA, but the heavy volume wasn’t causing headaches at Southwest Florida International airport.

There weren’t any delays or cancellations at the airport as of 5 p.m. Wednesday. That was a relief for travelers like Dave O’Brien and his family, who were headed to Wisconsin.

“I was anticipating crowds, but so far it looks like we’re in good shape,” O’Brien said.

The O’Briens weren’t taking any chances and arrived at the airport two hours before their flight. Timing was key for Brian and Angie Carrillo, who drove 15 hours from Kentucky to Southwest Florida with their six kids in tow.

“We leave at night and we do that crazy mom and dad thing and we just haul all the way while everyone is sleeping,” said Angie Carrillo.

Southwest Florida is a magnet for those looking to use the long weekend for a getaway.

“We can get turkey anytime, but we can’t get sunshine unless we come here,” Carrillo said.
