Is the public truly ‘not in any danger?’

FORT MYERS, Fla. — “The public is not in any danger.”

That statement has been made countless times, yet several murders and other major crimes haven’t resulted in any arrests.

In fact, two of the most high profile crimes in Southwest Florida, the Club Blu shooting and the ZombiCon shooting, have remained unsolved.

Now, many people believe they are in danger due to Lee County’s history of unsolved crime.

Linda Macklin, a seasonal resident, wasn’t convinced when Lee County deputies said “the community is not in danger and this is a contained incident” regarding the recent Gulf Coast Town Center shooting.

“No, I would say if someone is shooting out of a car, someone’s going to be in danger,” she said. “No, that’s scary.”

Trish Routte of CrimeStoppers believes sending anonymous tips is the most effective way to ensure criminals get arrested.

“If they’re still walking on the streets, guess what? They’re still a threat to you and innocent victims, so remove the threat,” Routte said. “You have the power to remove the threat.”
