Fort Myers school debuts sensory room for disabled students

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Cypress Lake High School students with autism and other disabilities have a new space where they can address challenges like aggression and anxiety.

The sensory room was created by behavior specialist Lori Ceilley to stimulate the students’ senses.

Elly Hagen, whose son is in the exceptional student education program at Cypress Lake, said the new room is a relief.

“To know that you have a place that you feel confident that your child is going to be during the day, with people working really hard to make them as successful as possible, there’s just no words for it,” Hagen said.

The room is fitted with a reading area, tubs of gel marbles, games and a projector with images of live animals. It was funded by The Bireley Family Foundation and The Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Foundation Inc.
