NORTH NAPLES, Fla. — A 23-year-old woman had a close call Wednesday night after she drove into a canal near Airport-Pulling Road just south of Immokalee Road. While she managed to swim to safety, what she did next left deputies confused. Witnesses said Shemekia Haughton stripped naked, ran around and began shouting. “She took off all of her clothes and started running around, saying she was a prostitute and also saying that how this was part of Jesus giving her one more chance and everything,” said witness Matthew Guitard. Haughton also told deputies and fire crews that another person was in the car. But when a dive team searched the submerged car to find the person, nobody was there. She was taken to jail after being treated and released at a hospital. She is facing charges of battery and resisting an officer with violence. Haughton is also believed to have been involved in a hit-and-run crash prior to crashing into the canal.
