FORT MYERS, Fla. – This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week. Here to discuss this year’s Flu Season and the Flu Vaccine is Dr. Annette St. Pierre-MacKoul.

Symptoms of the Flu:

  • Contagious Respiratory Illness
  • Affects the nose, throat and lungs.
  • Can involve vomiting / diarrhea – usually in children.
  • Disease can be mild to severe.
  • Can lead to death.

Yearly Statistics of the Flu:

  • Causes millions of illnesses
  • Innumerable work days missed
  • Hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations
  • Thousands to tens of thousands deaths per year
  • >100 deaths per year in children

Prevention of the Flu:

  • Vaccination
  • Good hand washing
  • Cough into your sleeve or shirt
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Eating right and exercising
  • MVI and water

Flu Vaccine:

  • Recommended for all over 6 months of age.
  • Takes 2-4 weeks to take effect after immunization.
  • Peak activity: December – February.
  • Milder case of the flu if you get sick.
