PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Bermont Road has reopened between U.S. 17 and State Road 31 following a deadly morning crash, according to a Charlotte County advisory message.

The crash killed one and injured three. The crash happened at around 7:43 a.m., and there was a roadblock in all directions on Bermont Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 2000 Ford Excursion was traveling westbound on Bermont Road and attempted to pass another vehicle while a 2006 Chrysler Voyager was driving, according to the release.

The Voyager drove onto a grassy shoulder to avoid the Explorer, but the front of the Voyager hit the left side of the Explorer.

Gerald Shipman, 60, of Lehigh Acres, was killed in the wreck, according to an FHP report.

The driver of the Ford Excursion suffered serious injuries, while the two passengers sustained minor injuries, authorities said. They were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

It is unclear if alcohol was a factor in this crash. Charges are pending.

No further information is immediately available.
