Gilchrist Park users vow to fight yearlong closure

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A portion of Gilchrist Park from Gill to Harvey streets is shutting down for a year due to lengthy renovations. but some nearby residents are working to change that.

“We’re going to sign a petition,” said Kevin Randolph, an avid park user. “… This is not a good way to move this project ahead.”

He and others want to see the project — which includes the construction of a 20-foot harbor walk, a new seawall and updated amenities — broken into phases.

But doing so would delay completion of the $2 million renovations, which are scheduled to finish by December 2017, city officials said.

The rest of the park is still open to the public, including the tennis, basketball and pickleball court
