Sheriff's sergeant charged with stealing from sports league

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) A Florida sheriff’s sergeant has been charged with fraud after prosecutors say he embezzled money from a police athletic league he oversaw.

The Florida Times-Union reports (http://bit.ly/2jMydBd) that St. Johns County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Gober III was charged on Thursday.

An offense report states that Gober spent thousands of dollars on dinners and entertainment for himself and friends using league funds.

Investigators said in the report that more than $30,000 in questionable purchases were made.

Gober is a 24-year veteran of the force and was placed on paid leave and removed from his duties as executive director of the St. Johns County Police Athletic League.

According to the report, Gober admitted to investigators using the league’s debit card “a few times” when his personal card wouldn’t go through.
