Naples mulls installation of new street cameras

Published:

NAPLES, Fla. Some city leaders want to install more than 56 cameras to keep a watch on who’s coming and going throughout the city.

The cameras would record license plates as cars drive in and out of the city. The new cameras would be located on streets that cross city limits, like Golden Gate Parkway, Goodlette-Frank Road, and North Horseshoe Drive.

Some nearby residents believe the cameras could be an invasion of privacy while others think they could be helpful.

City leaders believe they act as a deterrent and can help police solve crimes by providing solid evidence.

Footage would be erased after 30 days if authorities don’t deem it necessary, city officials said.

Cameras that can read license plates already exist in the Royal Harbor and Port Royal neighborhoods.

City Council has not announced when they will vote on the idea.
