Brush fire sparks in Alva hours after burn ban

ALVA, Fla. Wildfire season has tightened its grip on Southwest Florida.

A small brush fire ignited Tuesday afternoon along Caloosa and North River roads just hours after Lee County issued a burn ban. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe it was man-made, the Florida Forest Service said.

The burn ban prohibits starting bonfires, campfires and trash fires. Other counties and municipalities, like Collier County and Fort Myers, issued their own burn bans weeks ago.

“The main thing is just getting the word out to people that you can’t burn,” Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District Chief Robert Dilallo said. “You need to be careful. We want people to be more aware.”
