FGCU play to highlight struggles of SWFL vets

Published: Updated:

NAPLES, Fla. A national project is putting veterans on center stage.

Veterans from Southwest Florida will put on a free play at Florida Gulf Coast University detailing their experiences in the military.

The performance, titled “Telling: Southwest Florida,” will highlight their trauma, struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and transition to civilian life. It’s part of an initiative called the Telling Project that’s staged veteran plays since 2008 across the country.

Cast members include Iraq infantry / military police veterans, a Vietnam War medic, and a veteran who served in Europe during the Cold War.

The goal of the show is to give veterans a voice and help the Southwest Florida community understand what they’ve gone through.

The one-night only engagement goes off at 7 p.m. Thursday in FGCU’s Daniels Media Center. A moderated question-and-answer discussion will follow, giving the audience a chance to interact.

The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Florida Humanities Council.
