Charlotte County residents on high alert following home robberies

DEEP CREEK, Fla. Doug Lewandowski was on a 20 minute bike ride when his home was targeted.

“I walked into the kitchen and saw broken glass,” he said. “I looked back in my office and I saw all of the lights on and the fan so I immediately went back out the back door and called the local authorities.”

Nine robberies were reported in the area since April 22, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said. Most have happened in the Murdock and Deep Creek areas during the day.

With Lewandoswski, thieves broke their way into his home.

“It looks like it was a hammer they tried to use to knock the dead bolt out, but he couldn’t unlock it or push it in so he managed to get a hammer and break this out and reached around and unlocked it,” he said.

Home owners are advised to remain vigilant, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Skip Conroy said.

“If someone should knock on your door, if you see a strange vehicle in your neighborhood, one that doesn’t belong there, then call the sheriff’s office,” Conroy said.
