FORT MYERS, Fla. Dr. Larry Antonucci will take over for Jim Nathan as President and CEO of Southwest Florida’s largest public health system.

Jim Nathan announced in April that he was to step down from his position on June 1 but would be involved in other capabilities until his contract expires in 2019, Lee Health spokeswoman Mary G. Briggs said. Nathan requested the appointment of Antonucci as his successor.

Antonucci, who moved to Southwest Florida in 1983 and founded Physicians’ Primary Care in 1996, has served as Lee Health’s Chief Operating Officer for nearly six years. One of his top priorities now will be improving quality of care at lower costs.

“I think what we’re seeing is more and more patients are having to come out of pocket for their healthcare expenses. There are higher deductibles, there are higher co-pays,” Antonucci said.

Lee County’s growing population has also created an overcrowding concern but Antonucci is positive that won’t be an ongoing issue.

“I’m very comfortable that with our current plan and that we’ll be able to handle the volume of patients for the foreseeable future,” he said.

WINK News reporter Adam Wright interviewed Antonucci and discussed his plans in more detail:
