Alcohol a factor in Cape Coral bicycle crash

CAPE CORAL, Fla. A 69-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries following a Friday night crash on Del Prado Boulevard South, the Cape Coral Police Department said.

The collision happened at approximately 10:45 p.m. at the 4400 block of Del Prado Boulevard South, police said.

Roary R. O’Rourke, 69, of Cape Coral, was cycling in the wrong direction, traveling east on Southeast 44th Street, police said. O’Rourke collided into a 2011 Mazda CX7 SUV driven by Senthil Balaji Girimurugan, 34, of Cape Coral who was turning from northbound Del Prado Boulevard onto Southeast 44th Street.

O’Rourke, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered life threatening injuries and was trauma alerted to a local hospital, police said. His alcohol level was nearly two times over the legal limit.

Girimurugan did not sustain any injuries at the time of teh crash, police said.
