LABELLE, Fla. A mother and daughter died in a crash Wednesday morning east of State Road 29, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Ligia Silva, 43, and Kallitha Silva, 14, both of LaBelle, were killed after their vehicle rolled over into a canal, according to the FHP. Debora Silva, 12, survived the wreck and sustained only minor injuries.

“You know, we go to crashes every day, but we’re human too,” FHP Lt. Greg Bueno said. “We may wear (a) uniform but it’s tough, especially when children are involved, when families are involved. It’s emotional. It’s tragic.”

The crash happened around 6:28 a.m. on Sears Road about 5 miles from State Road 29, State troopers said. Ligia Silva was taking her daughters to their school bus stop, according to Bueno.

Debora ran a long way until she was finally able to find a phone and call her father for help, Bueno said. She was treated at HealthPark Medical Center in south Fort Myers and released.

Sears Road is unpaved and surfaced instead with loose dirt and gravel. The cause of the crash is unclear, but speed or mechanical issues could have been behind it, Bueno said.
