Tropical system likely to develop; flooding expected

FORT MYERS, Fla. Numerous storms are in the forecast through Wednesday with a tropical system likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico, WINK meteorologist Erik Salna said.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Peace River basin in DeSoto County. The warning takes effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday and run through 2 p.m. Thursday.

The river is forecast to rise above flood stage by Tuesday morning and continue to rise to near 11.8 feet by early Wednesday morning, the weather service said. Access roads to the River Acres subdivision are expected to flood.

Salna is monitoring two areas of interest in the tropics, but one forming just off the Yucatan Peninsula is the main concern, he said. It’s projected to travel west of Southwest Florida.

“This has the potential to make it a very wet couple of days depending if it’s well offshore or hugging our coastline,” Salna said.
