MEXICO CITY (AP) Franklin weakened to an extratropical system late Thursday morning as it moved farther inland over eastern Mexico.

The system made landfall early Thursday as a Category 1 hurricane, the first of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says maximum sustained winds have decreased to 30 mph with additional weakening expected. The government of Mexico has discontinued all warnings.

The remnants of Franklin are centered about 20 miles north-northwest of Mexico City and are moving west at 20 mph.
