Hurricane shelters open in SWFL

FORT MYERS, Fla. Below is a list of open shelters in Southwest Florida as Hurricane Irma looms.

Charlotte County

The county’s shelters are full, so residents are urged to go to the following shelters in other counties:

  • Atwater Elementary School, 4701 Huntsville Ave, North Port
  • Heron Creek Middle School, 6501 W. Price Blvd., North Port (pet-friendly for cats and dogs)
  • North Port High School, 6400 W. Price Blvd., North Port
  • Riverview High School, 1 Ram Way, Sarasota (pet-friendly for cats and dogs)

Collier County

The following shelters are open:

  • Gulf Coast High School, 7878 Shark Way, North Naples (No cots or mattresses)

The following shelters have reached capacity:

  • Corkscrew Middle School on 1165 County Road 858, Naples
  • Cypress Palm Middle School on 4255 18th Ave. NE, Naples (pets allowed)
  • North Collier Regional Park on 15000 Livingston Road, Naples (pets allowed)
  • Golden Gate Elementary School on 4911 20th Place SW, Naples (pets allowed)
  • Golden Terrace Elementary School on 2711 44th Terrace SW, Naples (pets allowed)
  • Golden Gate Middle School on 2701 48th Terrace SW, Naples (pets allowed)
  • Golden Gate High School, 2925 Titan Way, Naples
  • Immokalee High School on 701 Immokalee Drive, Immokalee
  • Immokalee Middle School on 401 N. 9th St., Immokalee (pets allowed)
  • Laurel Oak Elementary School, 7800 Immokalee Road, North Naples
  • Lake Trafford Elementary School on 3500 Lake Trafford Rd, Immokalee
  • North Naples Middle School on 16165 Learning Ln, Naples
  • Mike Davis Elementary School on 3215 Magnolia Pond Dr, Naples

DeSoto County

The following shelters are open:

  • Turner Agri-Civic Center, 2250 NE Roan St., Arcadia (pet-friendly)
  • DeSoto Middle School and Gymnasium, 420 E. Gibson St., Arcadia

A special needs shelter for those who need mechanical aid or oxygen to survive is open here:

  • South Florida State College, 2251 NE Turner Ave., Arcadia (To register, click here)

Glades County

  • West Glades Elementary School, 2586 County Road 721, Building 500, Muse (opening 1 p.m. Friday)

Highlands County is making room for 400 Glades County residents at South Florida State College on 600 West College Drive in Avon Park, about 65 miles away from Moore Haven. Shelters at the following locations, which are in mandatory evacuation zones, will not be opening as originally planned:

  • Moore Haven High School Gym, 700 Terrier Pride Drive SW, Moore Haven
  • Maple Grove Baptist Church, 12777 East State Road 78 NE, Lakeport

Hendry County

  • LaBelle Middle School, 8000 E. Cowboy Way, LaBelle (opening 8 a.m. Friday, no pets)
  • Country Oaks Elementary School 2052 NW Eucalyptus Blvd LaBelle (opening 8 a.m. Friday, no pets)
  • A special needs shelter will open at West Glades School at 2500 South County Road 731 in LaBelle
  • Upthegrove Elementary School on 280 Main St., LaBelle (pets allowed)
  • Clewiston High School on 1501 South Francisco St. (last resort shelter, pets allowed, but they must be in crates)

The following shelters are at capacity:

  • Labelle High School 4050 E. Cowboy Way LaBelle (opening 8 a.m. Friday, no pets)

Highlands County

The following shelters are open:

  • Avon Park Recreation Center at 207 E. State St. in Avon Park
  • Lake Placid High School at 202 Green Dragon Drive in Lake Placid (approaching capacity)
  • Highlands County Fair Convention Center on 781 Magnolia Avenue

The following secondary shelters are open:

  • Avon Park South Florida State College on 600 West College Drive
  • Lake Placid Genesis Center on 218 East Belleview St. (no generator capability)

Lee County

The following shelters are open:

  • Mirror Lakes Elementary School, 525 Charwood Ave. South, Lehigh Acres
  • North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, 1856 Arts Way
  • Veterans Park Recreation Center on 49 Homestead Rd., Lehigh Acres

The following shelters are completely full:

  • Estero Rec Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Road., Estero
  • Island Coast High School, 2125 De Navarra Pkwy., Cape Coral
  • Lee County High Tech Center North, 360 Santa Barbara Blvd. N., Cape Coral (opening at 3 p.m. Saturday)
  • South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road., Fort Myers (primary pet shelter)
  • Varsity Lakes Middle School, 801 Gunnery Road., Lehigh Acres
  • Ray V. Pottorf Elementary on 4600 Challenger Blvd., Fort Myers
  • Alico Arena on 12181 FGCU Lake Pkwy E, Fort Myers
  • Harns Marsh Elementary School, 1800 Unice Avenue N, Lehigh Acres
  • East Lee County High School, 715 Thomas Sherwin Ave., Lehigh Acres (primary pet shelter)
  • Harns Marsh Middle School, 1820 Unice Ave. N., Lehigh Acres
  • Oak Hammock Middle School, 5321 Tice St., Fort Myers
  • Germain Arena on 11000 Everglades Parkway, Estero

East Lee County High School and South Fort Myers High School are the primary pet shelters, but pets are allowed at the other Lee County shelters. Pets are discouraged at Germain Arena but won’t be turned away.

Evacuees should bring crates or at least have pets on leashes.
