FORT MYERS, Fla. Hurricane warnings were out for the coast of Mexico on Thursday as Katia loomed offshore. Katia had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and was about 175 miles north-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, as of the National Hurricane Center’s 10 p.m. advisory. The storm is not expected to affect Southwest Florida, WINK Chief Meteorologist Jim Farrell said. It’s expected to move toward the coast of Mexico Friday night or early Saturday, according to the hurricane center. Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and Katia could be near major hurricane strength at landfall. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Cabo Rojo to Laguna Verde. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for north of Cabo Rojo to Rio Panuco, and south of Laguna Verde to Puerto Veracruz.
