FORT MYERS, Fla. A mental health professional advised area residents to prepare their homes families and supplies as Hurricane Irma approaches Florida, but also to take a moment to breathe.

“It’s totally in everybody’s face right now, and I think it’s important that people be aware, but I also think it’s important for people have time to relax,” said Dr. Laura Streyffeler, a licensed mental health counselor.

Streyffeler suggested meditation and visualization exercises, but also stressed the storm will eventually pass.

“I think it is important to remember that the storm is going to pass it’s going to come. People have been through storms before. They’ve been very traumatic but they get to the other side of it,” Streyffeler said. “Do as much as you can to prepare and know you’ve done everything you can. get yourself and your family to a safe place.”
