Fort Myers man dies in crash on US 41 in south Fort Myers

One person is dead after a crash that closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 south of Greenwood Park Circle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Christopher Whittle, 41, of Fort Myers was traveling south in the northbound lanes of US 41 without headlights on when he collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle attempted to swerve out of the way but was unable to avoid a collision, according to the FHP.

Whittle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The wreck took place around early Tuesday morning, according to the FHP. The northbound lanes were blocked until 6:30 a.m.

It is unknown whether alcohol or other substances were involved.
