Work is underway for the Cape Coral Animal Shelter which will be built along southwest Second Avenue near southwest Third Terrace in Cape Coral. The shelter board has been working hard to raise money for a new project which will be a no-kill shelter. “There are too many animals that need homes,” said Carole Latino, a local pet owner. That’s why Latino says she adopted her cat from a shelter in Fort Lauderdale 16 years ago. “I love the idea, love the idea. I think they should all be no kill shelters,” she said. It’s a project that Cape Coral Animal Shelter Board President JoAnn Elardo has been working on for years. “To have a shovel in the ground before that, I mean, we’re thrilled,” she said. “It’s just great work by everybody.” So far, nearly $2 million has been raised for the new 8,000 square-foot facility which will include a medical center. Elardo says the new animal shelter will hopefully help relieve other shelters in Southwest Florida that are almost always at capacity. “Every shelter that opens up is very important to the community,” Elardo said. “It provides education as well as helping pets. Always more is better.” And pet owners agree. “I think it’s going to be great to be honest with you,” said another pet owner, George Kasuba. “You know, people are looking for pets and they’re a little leery about pet stores.” Elardo says they need another $2.2 million to complete all the work.
