There are 300,000 items in the average American home, and one in ten Americans rent offsite storage. So it’s no wonder, decluttering and minimalism have started building momentum. But what about getting the most out of what you do keep?

One sock short of a pair? Fill it up with dried citrus peels and flower petals, tie at the top and throw in your dresser to keep your clothes smelling fresh! What about that musty closet smell? Freshen it up with a bit of chalk! Place a few pieces of chalk in your closet or hamper to help eliminate and absorb odors, and did you know a bit of aspirin can eliminate perspiration stains? Place two crushed aspirin in 100 ml of warm water and soak your clothes in the mixture for two hours.

New heels a bit slippery? Using sandpaper, rub the bottoms a bit to gain some traction.
Also a little clear nail polish can save your stockings. Dab it on either side of a run to prevent it from extending further.

What about kitchen staples? The cooking spray on your counter can fix the squeaky door hinge that’s been bugging you. Also a bit of olive oil can bring back the shine to your stainless steel items. Crazy enough, ketchup can also clean your silver jewelry! Simply soak it a bowl for several minutes, then wipe the grime away.

In the mood to try composting? You don’t need fancy equipment to do so. Just put your compost scraps in a wax-free paper bag. You can then transfer the whole thing into an outdoor compost bin when you’re ready.
