Cape Coral Police say they have a red pickup truck believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old girl Monday morning.

Police said, “A person of interest has also been developed but no further information about the identity will be released as the investigation is still in its infancy.”

Layla Aiken, a second-grade student at Trafalgar Elementary school, died after she was hit by a truck while waiting for her school bus at the corner of NE 3rd Ave. and NE 19th Terr.

Rob Spicker, a School District of Lee County spokesperson, said the transportation dept. goes to every bus stop to make sure each one follows established guidelines.

“Those stops that your children are asked to wait at are already safe because they meet the minimum state guidelines,” Spicker said.

The district said the state does not require sidewalks or street lights. But, the district said it will review the bus stop to see if changes need to be done.

The vehicle in question is considered evidence and has been seized for investigative purposes.

Aiken’s father, Glenn Aiken, told WINK News her two 9-year-old brothers watched her get hit by the suspected truck that never stopped.
