Tropical Storm Dorian may reach hurricane strength over the Caribbean Sea by Wednesday. After that, the strength and intensity are still uncertain, although models on Monday have shifted eastward.

As of 11 p.m., National hurricane Center and WINK News Weather Authority reports all of Southwest Florida is now under Dorian’s forecast cone, as it approaches the Lesser Antilles Monday.

The storm is also a little bit weaker since the update at 8 p.m. Weather Authority continues to report minimal impacts in Southwest Florida, and will continue to update on the daily.

Dorian will have to battle wind shear and dry air, as the storm continues to move west. Additionally, if Dorian’s center moves over the mountainous terrain of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, the high elevation will work to rip the storm apart and displace the showers and thunderstorms that make it up. If it stays just a little farther east, there’s a better chance of Dorian maintaining current intensity, if not strengthening.

WINK News Weather Authority continues monitoring the storm as it goes to the Caribbean and will have a better idea if Southwest Florida will be affected by midweek.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, Tropical Storm Dorian has maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and is roughly 135 miles east-southeast of Barbados. The current location is at 13.2° N 59.7° W, and the storm is moving west-northwest at 14 miles per hour with minimum pressure of 1003 mb.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for St. Lucia. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Barbados, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which means conditions are expected within 36 hours. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Dominica, Grenada and its dependencies, Saba, and St. Eustatius, which means conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Other Tropics News: As of 11 p.m., the tropical disturbance that was along the east coast of Florida and is now north west away from the Carolinas has been upgraded to a tropical depression, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It’s the sixth depression of the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
