Cape Coral Police confirm 3-year-old shot by sibling Monday; deemed accidental

Cape Coral Police have confirmed a three-year-old was shot Monday by a sibling.

According to Cape Coral Police, the 3-year-old was shot in the chest at a home near Andalusia Boulevard and Diplomat Parkway at 10:25 p.m.

Police say they believe one shot was fired accidentally from a handgun by an older sibling.

The child was transported to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and is now in fair condition.

A lot of people living near the home remember seeing police the night a shot was fired. but only one family remembers hearing the gunshot, and neighbors are praying for a speedy recovery.

“Definitely hit home,” neighbor Madison Spees said. “I couldn’t imagine it being one of mine.”

Police said in a release: “After a thorough investigation, it has been determined that the handgun was locked up in a safe. The handgun was not readily accessible at the time.”

“I have a 13-year-old,” neighbor Tera Rose said. “So that’s kind of scary being accessed by another kid.”

One neighbor heard the shot. They did not want to appear on camera, but they said they feared the worst when the saw the sea of flashing lights coming from the vehicles of authorities.

This shooting has been ruled accidental, and police say no charges are being filed.

The three-year-old is continuing to recover and was updated from critical to fair condition.
