A 2-year-old girl who was found unresponsive and with severe injuries in a North Fort Myers home has died.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on W. Mariana Avenue at 1:43 p.m. on April 29 in reference to an unresponsive child.

They met with the child’s caregiver, Nicholas Canfield, who was attempting lifesaving measures on the child. The toddler was immediately taken to the hospital, where she was in critical condition with a “poor prognosis,” according to the sheriff’s office.

LCSO said medical staff at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit determined there were indications of recent sexual abuse, as well as fresh bruises, swelling and other forms of physical trauma.

The Department of Children and Families reports the toddler died two days after she was admitted to the hospital.

Canfield, 25, was arrested April 30 on charges of capital sexual battery on a victim under 12 and aggravated child abuse.

He remains in the Lee County Jail without bond.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it is working with the Office of the State Attorney as the investigation continues.
