Lee Health talks coronavirus patients and case numbers

Lately, coronavirus cases in Florida have been hitting record highs. And that has left those in the health care industry with questions about what they need to do to better accommodate recent spikes.

But the Governor said, while masks are useful, it would be difficult to enforce. “We did an advisory at the beginning of May, and we’ve advised that it’s something that can make an impact. At the same time to do police and put criminal penalties on that is something that is uh um is is is probably um uh would would backfire,” said Governors DeSantis.

Health officials say there could be consequences if there isn’t some kind of action taken.

Barry Bloom, a Harvard professor of public health, said, “If people don’t do it voluntarily, then, I think you have to start closing things so that they don’t have the option of transmitting and being transmitted to.”

And Lee Health CEO Larry Antonucci said in the beginning people were doing well but they’ve gotten comfortable not wearing masks and beginning to go back out into the world as businesses reopen.

“We were able to flatten the curve in a very dramatic day as the Governor mentioned. But I think we’re getting complacent,” said Antonucci.

Meanwhile, Lee Health has seen over 200 COVID-19 patients just on Friday, which is 30 more patients than the day before.
