Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left one man dead late this morning at a gas station in North Fort Myers.

Sergeant Russell Park, Public Information Officer with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office had this to say, “This morning just before 11 a.m. Lee County deputies responded to the handy food Mart on Laurel Lane behind me in reference to a disturbance.”

One man nearby said he was working when he heard the shot.

“I was inside working I heard the gunshot and came out outside didn’t see anything I went back inside I thought it was just fireworks going off,” said Joseph Bocchino, Owner of Brother’s Car Care Center.

His business is located next to Handy’s Food Mart.

Bocchino said that he isn’t used to things like that happening, calling it “Real shocking”. He said, “It doesn’t happen often here and that’s real close to me.”

Sergeant Park wants the community to know that all of the people are detained and that they don’t need to worry. “This is being investigated by our major crimes unit. This is an isolated incident. All parties are accounted for and there is no danger to the public,” he said.

But Bocchino admits, he’s uncomfortable. “Not only do I have a business here but I live right next door so that makes it even worse and I have two daughters one is a baby and one is 17 and yeah it’s gonna make me worried,” Bocchino said.

He also has a theory about what caused the crime. He said, “The owner of the store I called to see what was going on and he explained to me that I believe it’s a robbery that went bad.”
