Cape Coral Police Department says scammers are “spoofing” the CCPD phone number and posing as law enforcement to take advantage of potential victims.

According to CCPD, “Spoofing” is a method where technology (usually a computer program) is used by someone to disguise their phone number as whatever number they choose, commonly used by phone scammers.

CCPD says sammers will use the names of former officers and make calls copying the department number, telling people “you’ve missed jury duty and will be arrested unless you make a credit card payment over the phone.”

The police department is adamant this is not their officers making these scam calls and wants the public to beware these potential calls.

“We will never call you like this or demand payment for anything. Hang up on these people; do not volunteer any personal or financial information,” CCPD shared in its Facebook post.

The CCPD hot line is 239-574-3223, and police want the public to be aware in case a call is received with the number and receive demands or threats similar to the one mentioned.
